Sleepy Mango’s Take on Specialty Coffee
My first experience with specialty coffee was unpleasant, to say the least. It was one of those super light-roasted coffees that the newer third wave specialty coffee scene seems to love—fruity, acidic, bright. It wasn’t my favorite, mostly because there was a disconnect between my expectations and the actual taste.
But somehow, I ended up working at that same café, and over time, I started experiencing coffees that were unique, complex, and incredible. I tasted coffees that scored 90+ points on the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) scale—the kinds of coffees considered some of the best. I even spent $39 on an 8oz Panama Geisha once, just to see what the hype was about.
And I got it. I loved having those experiences—luxury, quality, indulgence.
I loved dialing in a pour-over just right, showcasing the unique flavors of a coffee, and watching customers experience something new. It wasn’t just about the coffee itself—it was the craft, the experience, and the social aspect of sharing something rare and beautifully prepared.
Then I’d Go Home… and Brew Bustelo
Every time I made coffee at home, I found myself going back to what I grew up with—something between filter coffee and Bustelo.
Not because I didn’t love high-end coffees, but because they didn’t fit into my everyday life.
As much as I enjoyed trying unique coffees, I wasn’t finishing the bags. I’d brew them a couple of times, appreciate them for what they were, and then move on, leaving half-full bags on my shelf.
Sharing Coffee in the Café vs. Drinking Coffee at Home
As a barista, I loved sharing these coffees with customers—the ritual, the precision, the attention to detail.
But at home, I didn’t want to be “on.”
I wanted something deeply satisfying, consistent, and versatile—something I could drink every day without overthinking it.
I kept chasing: ☕ High-quality coffee that tasted good no matter how I brewed it.

Basically, I wanted a coffee that could do it all. Maybe that was asking too much.
At some point, my sister sent me a bag from 49th Parallel Coffee, and I finally tried Verve’s Sermon Blend. Something clicked.
These coffees were balanced, layered, and consistently enjoyable—equally good black or with milk. I could drink them every single day, never tiring of them. These were coffees sourced thoughtfully and roasted with the customer in mind.
